International Research Conference on “Conservation and Development’’

In December 2014, the First National Research and Development Forum on “The Path Way for the Sustainable Development in Lao PDR” was successfully organized, while in 2015 the Second Annual Research Forum on “Getting Ready for AEC: Issues, implications and ways forward” was conducted with admirable outcome. Furthermore,  in 2016 on the occasion of 20th Anniversary of the National University of Laos, an International Research Forum was organized on November 3, 2016, entitled “The Role of University in Green and Sustainable Development”. In 2017, this year, National University of Laos will cohost with Souphanouvng University to organize the International Research Conference on “Conservation and Development” at Souphanouvong University, Luang Prabang Province.  


The primary objectives of the conference are to:

  • Establish a long-term platform for staff, academic lecturers and researchers from Lao universities and research institutes to present and disseminate their scientific research results in order for societies, academics, policy-makers as well as researchers, themselves, to be informed, utilize and continue to conduct effective and high quality researches;
  • to support and strengthen research culture of universities in Laos by providing opportunities to Lao researchers to improve their relation and communication skills, organize a discussion workshop, understand in-depth socio-economic development priority, and conduct prioritized researches;
  • to establish scientific research-based data tank by collecting of research papers, abstracts from researchers who present their work in the conference. As a result, this would be a practical and useful data source for academics, lecturers, and researchers to utilize in their work and contribute to the socio-economic development of Laos; and
  • to exchange scientific research experience, knowledge, skills and information between local and regional universities.


Main themes and subthemes of the conference

The main themes of this year conference are associated with ‘Conservation and Development’, while in the scope of the main themes, we focus on the following subthemes:

  • Biodiversity
  • Environment
  • Cultural and Social Aspects
  • Economics
  • Science, Technology and Innovation


The participants would be researchers, academic lecturers, staff, and graduate students from national and international universities and research institutes.

Expected Outcome The expected outcome of this year conference would involve an establishment of a long-term research platform for researchers, academics and graduate students from national and international universities and research institutes to present their research findings and carry on effective and high quality researches. The conference would promote and strengthen research network and research culture of Lao universities as well as providing opportunities for Lao researchers to exchange their research experience and knowledge with international  partners. Furthermore, the conference would raise an awareness on issues of conservation and sustainable development with multiple stakeholders, bridging between public, private and higher education sectors, and it will offer a facilitation of knowledge creation and trafering.   Fees

The conference fee is $ 100 USD for a researcher or a presenter who presents his/her research work in the conference, and $ 50 USD for other accompanying persons or participants. Please note that visa application, international and local transportation, accommodation, and round-trip travel expenses are to be covered by the participants.   


The conference will be held at Souphanouvong University, Luang Prabang Province, in November 23, 2017. For transportation from Luang Prabang City to Souphanouvong University where the conference takes place, there will be free bus services offered by the organizing committee on the conference day, and the starting point is on the opposite side of Joma Bakery Café, Chao Fa Ngum Rd, Luang Prabang Province, Laos. The buses will leave at 7: 30 am onward.

Submitting Abstracts

  • Abstract submission: Individual researchers should submit an abstract to the organizing committee. Abstracts should be based on empirical work or applied research conducted in relation to the themes of the conference.


  • Deadline for abstract submission: October 25, 2017.


Abstracts can be submitted in English Language and should be no more than 400 words. Abstracts must include the following parts:

  1. Title of presentation
  2. Author(s), organization and email address
  3. Content of abstract:
    1. Problem statement or description the development issue the research seeks to address
    2. Description of the research itself, including objectives and methods
    3. Key results or findings
    4. Summary of policy recommendations or solutions if exist
